Luxembourg is a small land locked country that is bordered by Germany, Belgium and France. In Luxembourg, three languages are widely spoken and these are German, French and Luxembourgish. Luxembourg has three main districts and these are divided into communes of which twelve are considered cities and the city of Luxembourg is the largest and the capital.

You find lush rolling hills in the north of the country. Luxembourg is an ancient city and is steeped in tradition and culture. In ancient times, due to the protective nature of the natural cliff fortifications, Luxembourg was a Roman out post for many hundred of years. Much of modern day Luxembourg city still resides atop these cliffs.

Luxembourg is typically known as a more rural country and has been overshadowed by cultures of neighboring countries. A handshake is the customary way to greet a native. When dining or visiting the home of a local, you may want to bring a small gift or some flowers. There are many great artisans in Luxembourg and it is famous for crystal and porcelain work.

The city of Luxembourg had it’s millennium celebration in 1963 which makes it a chartered city for over a thousand years. You will find many historic sites to visit in Luxembourg City with the old city gates being a favorite tourist stop. You may also want to wander the streets of Luxembourg which are narrow and full of history. The palace of the Grand Duke can be found in Luxembourg as well as the Casements beneath the city. If you love scenery, Luxembourg is known as being one of the most photogenic countries in Europe.

How to get around the country

Luxembourg city boasts the only airport in Luxembourg. Due to the size of the country, getting around is not too difficult and the most common way to travel is by train. You can purchase passes that will allow you to travel by train at your leisure and may even allow you travel outside of Luxembourg for one fare which makes this an economically sound way to travel.

If you choose to drive, you must keep to the right hand side of the road and you will also want to keep in mind that drinking and driving are taken seriously and not tolerated. Seat belts are also mandatory so do not forget to buckle up.
