Berlin is the capital of Germany and after World War Two, for a time span of fifty years, the capital was Bonn as Germany was split into two distinct countries, the east and west. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, Germany was united once again and Berlin went back to being the main capital again.
Germany has gone through many political upheavals in it’s recent past the most notable being Nazi Germany. German is the main language spoken here though English is widely known so if you are not a German speaker, you will find those who speak English easily enough.
Local Customs
The most common greeting in Germany is shaking hands. If you are going to dinner at the home of a local, bringing flowers when you go is customary and roses are highly regarded. You will be offered refreshments and a meal. You can plan on bringing formal clothing only if you are planning a big night out otherwise casual dress is typical.
Site Seeing
Germany has many resorts that cater to any whim or wish. There are many other types of site seeing to do in Germany as it is rich in culture and history. There are many castles in Germany that are stunning with ancient architecture. There are many sites from World War Two that may deem a visit such at Auschwitz and there are many museums dedicated to this this topic as well. If you are one who is looking for more cultured entertainment, Stuttgart is famous for the theatre and opera. There are many cultural museums as well. Germany tends to get a lot of rain so bringing some wet weather clothing is suggested as you will more than likely have an opportunity to wear the clothing at some point in your travels across Germany.
How to get around the country
Germany has a very reliable public transportation system and tourists are encourage to purchase a Welcome Pass that will offer unlimited bus travel around Germany and also maintains routes to many of the major tourist stops making this a great deal for families or travelers on a budget. You may decide to rent a car and do the driving yourself so that you can control when and where you stop.
The Eurostar is the main train running throughout the country and passes can be purchased easily enough and are quite affordable as well. There are also ferry connections to other major cities and there are airports in most of the major cities for those who would rather travel by plane.
