Travel Tips for the Aspiring Travel Writer

If you’re looking to become a travel writer, there are a few important tips that you need to know before you get started. It is very important that you have some experience with traveling first. This is where you can obtain material that will become part of your stories on paper. Getting acquainted with being on the road, and all of its demands, is very advisable if you plan on being a travel writer in the future.

Experience is the key. You need to travel around or travel abroad and absorb the local scene. If possible, try to get as much experience as a regular tourist prior to starting to write.

Try to pick up something that’s original to the region you plan on writing about. You want to capture the essence of the place, the ambience and things that are happening there. Look for things like festivals and special events that are local to the region. In this way, you’ll have plenty of things to write about when it’s time to put pen to paper.

When you’re not on the road read the business and travel section of your newspaper, get some travel logs, road maps, travel magazines and brochures and do plenty of research on the Internet about where you’re planning to go. Just like any writer, a travel writer needs to get acquainted with the trade.

Be realistic. There are very few writers who can make a living out of travel writing by itself. So, it’s important to have a day job or something to fall back on in case your travel writing career doesn’t take off. As with any kind of writing, you need to be practical when it comes to your expectations. Any artistic career doesn’t happen overnight, and sometimes it could take years before you get the type of recognition you need to be a successful travel writer.

However, you can’t make this an excuse not to do anything. If your goal is to be a travel writer, you should continue to send out articles just like any other writer. If you get rejection letters, make a game out of it, and don’t take it personally. Editors are very specific about the kind of work that they want. So, your writing may be good, but you may not have written about a place that the editor wants to read about or want his readers to read about.
